Happy Holidays from CrossleyShear

Dear Valued Clients and Friends,

During this holiday season, as we take time to reflect on the year, spend time with loved ones and enjoy the season of good cheer, the team at CrossleyShear Wealth Management would like to wish you a wonderful holiday season, thank you for your business and for placing your trust and confidence in us. In honor and appreciation of our clients, we continue our tradition and dedication to giving back. With much thought and consideration, we have each chosen the following charities near and dear to our hearts.

Evan Shear
In a world that needs more love and less hate, this year my family and I have chosen our donation to go to the Anti-Defamation League. We have witnessed horrible crimes against innocent people in our nation this year in the name of hate. Hate has no place in this world and as someone who has faced antisemitism personally as a child and adult, I hope someday my kids can live in a world where they don’t have to worry about their faith. Together all of us can make a difference with accepting each other for our strengths and our weaknesses and loving one another unconditionally.

Dale Crossley
Being the father of three beautiful young women along with my involvement on the finance committee has led to my charitable donation going to The Preeclampsia Foundation this year. Their mission is to reduce maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy by providing patient support and education, raising public awareness, catalyzing research and improving healthcare practices. They envision a world where preeclampsia no longer threatens the lives of mothers and babies. I am happy to support that vision this holiday season! I would also like to give extra praise and gratitude to our family, friends, and clients that further this mission as doctors, nurses, midwives, and counselors.

Tracy Stuck
This year I have chosen a local charity focusing on children. As single Mom I was very fortunate. I have always had a good job and a supportive family. There were struggles. However, in the grand scheme of things, I was able to provide shelter, food, clothing and transportation for my son and I. Some people are not as fortunate. Baby DJ was founded by “Johnny Magic”, a local radio station personality, 25 years ago. Working around town he saw the struggle of families all year, but especially during the holidays. Johnny’s goal was to provide children the best holiday experience possible. The organization has expanded over the years and includes charity efforts throughout the year. No matter what the situation, children need to be valued, provided for and not forgotten, they are the future.

Karin Hobin
The charity I have chosen for this year is the For a Day Foundation, this foundation provides therapeutic play events to children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The Orlando Chapter hosts these events at Florida Hospital for Children and Nemours Children’s Hospital. They provide children and their families a few hours of imaginative play. They give them the opportunity to escape their daily routine and try to provide them with a positive, lasting memory. The internationally recognized play-oriented programs bring attention to the power of happiness in healing.

I am delighted to have joined the CrossleyShear team this year and to have the opportunity to give to an organization that has quickly become one of my favorite charities! Having elementary school- aged children myself, the organization I’ve chosen is the Children’s Hunger Project. Earlier this year, my oldest child came home from school and said, “Mom, I don’t think my friend in class is getting enough to eat. She said that her parents forgot to give her dinner last night.” Having been completely blown away by the observation of my 10-year- old, the reality sunk in that not everyone is as fortunate as we are, to be able to provide our children with regular and healthy meals. And much to my surprise after having met with the Children’s Hunger Project, over 50% of Brevard County students are eligible for the National Free or Reduced Lunch Program. What’s worse, the teachers and school administrators at each school are left with the devastating responsibility of choosing which children receive the food packages each week (and which don’t) because the need is so great! I grew up here in Brevard County and my heart breaks to think about kids being hungry or needing proper nutrition, right here in our backyard! Their mission is simple, “We see a hungry kid. We buy food. We feed the kid.” And I am pleased to be helping them this year!

Bobbi McCoy
This year I have chosen Friends of Children of Brevard County, Inc., (Friends), which is a non- profit 501(c)(3) organization with volunteers who serve to raise funds and solicit in-kind donations to provide for the unmet needs of abused, neglected or abandoned children in Brevard County. It’s heartbreaking to realize that each year hundreds of Brevard County’s children are removed from their homes and placed under the Dependency Court as the result of abuse, neglect or abandonment. Each child under the Dependency Court is assigned a volunteer advocate called a Guardian ad Litem (GAL). When these Guardians have a child with an unmet need, they call upon “Friends” for help with almost anything: a bed, a bike, a pair of shoes, or even a school uniform. This helps to bring a sense of normalcy to their disrupted lives, especially during the holidays. This is why I have chosen “Friends” this year for my charitable organization.

Happy Holidays we hope the holiday brings you great joy and prosperity.

Evan, Dale, Tracy, Karin, Bobbi and Carrie

CrossleyShear Market Insights – November 21, 2018

Just a few months ago everyone wanted to plow into stocks, all stocks, especially tech stocks. Then something very normal happened…we had a correction. A correction is a pullback usually around 10% from market highs. Just a few weeks earlier we hit new all-time highs. So what has changed? Not much. A correction happens every 8 months on average. Guess when the last one was…around 8 months ago. With that said, a correction usually feels a lot worse than it is. It also often brings out the ghosts of 2008 or 2000. “I don’t want another 2008!!!” is a common chorus we hear. Corrections also tend to last around 64 days on average.

A couple of things we want to point out.

  1. We feel your pain, this isn’t fun, and nobody likes seeing hard earned money/gains go down.
  2. If people sold every time, we had a correction, they more than likely would never have any gains in a portfolio.
  3. Markets typically have swings of at least 10% a year and are positive 7 out of 10 years on average. That means 70% of the time, you make money in stocks.
  4. We often hear “I would love to own this or that if it was just 10% cheaper.” Well, what are you waiting for?

We feel this correction may feel worse than usual for a few non-fundamental reasons. One being the imaginary time frame called a calendar. When a correction happens early in the year, people feel like they have all year to come back. When it happens in the later part of the year, they feel they can’t make it back by the end of the year. This is somewhat silly. Although we like to “keep score” on an annual basis, investors time horizon should extend beyond the period it takes for a trip around the sun.

One of the table stakes of the way we try to manage money is to attempt to evaluate the level of risk someone is willing to take and then we use various math-based models to attempt to reduce the potential for catastrophic loss. It’s not emotional, it doesn’t care how we feel, it’s based on the numbers. If we continue to decline based on momentum, we will continue to remove risk and raise capital. Fundamentals are good right now for most companies and for our Country. Unemployment is low, wages are rising, earnings are good, and inflation is stable. This is not 2008. If we saw declining fundamentals paired with a drop in the market, we would be more concerned. We, like you, are frustrated. The poor stuffed bear on my desk has been brutalized the last month. However, we see better days ahead and have several potential catalysts that could turn this around with no notice. Stay the course and have faith in your investment and financial plan. If something has changed in your situation that dictates a change, please let us know so we can make adjustments. Otherwise, try to tune out the noise and enjoy your family and friends and the good in your life this holiday season and every day.

All the best,
Evan and Dale

CrossleyShear Wealth Management Team Helps Local Organizations During August’s Raymond James Cares Initiative

HEATHROW/MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA, September 26, 2018 –  We are pleased to announce CrossleyShear’s participation in Raymond James Cares, a corporate community involvement initiative during the month of August, that encourages advisors and associates to make a difference in their communities. While CrossleyShear participates in community services and charitable giving throughout the year, we are proud to take part in the collective nationwide effort along with Raymond James’ advisors and associates.

The entire CrossleyShear team, their families and many of our clients traveled to the coast and gathered at Cherie Down Park in Cape Canaveral, FL for a beach clean up effort. Although the beaches are cleaned frequently by volunteers, the CrossleyShear clean up yielded countless bags of waste. “Everyone at CrossleyShear feels strongly about keeping our beaches clean and protecting wildlife from the harm that many types of trash can cause,” stated Karin Hobin, Director of Marketing. “Participating in the beach clean up really underscored how important it is to maintain an ongoing cleanup effort and we were grateful for the help of our clients.”

In addition to the Cherie Down Park Beach clean up, our team also learned that the SafeHouse of Seminole, a Seminole County organization that provides short and long-term campus housing for women, teenagers and children affected by domestic violence, was in dire need of travel and full-size toiletries. Having worked with the organization in the past, we spread the word to family members and clients collecting hundreds of donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, razors and more. “The women, children and teenagers at the SafeHouse usually have to leave their homes suddenly in a crisis,” says Karin Hobin, Marketing Director. “They are in danger and don’t have time to pack essentials. These small toiletries help provide some comfort during a period of terrible stress and upheaval in their lives and we are pleased to be able to help.”
